I really don't get the deal with Americans' fear of government in this health insurance dust-up.

Why wouldn't you want an institution not motivated by profit to administer health insurance? For fuck's sakes, the private sector has as many idiots running things as in the public sector. The difference is that in the private sector organizations are rewarded financially for not providing the services that have been paid for. All I hear from insured Americans is that health insurance is fine when you're paying for it, but not so great when you're trying to make a claim. So what's the point? Fine, you don't like universal healthcare because you don't want to pay into a system that some people will abuse? Stop paying your insurance premiums, then. All of them. That's what insurance is: a pool of money contributed to by all, called upon by many, and stolen by a few. Let the insurer worry about who's stealing from them.

Universal healthcare works. And I'm living constantly with its results.

We're having a baby next month and won't pay a nickel for the midwife. If we have to go to the hospital we won't pay for anything. If I hurt myself going downstairs now and need to go to an ER I wouldn't pay for anything. The hernia I had repaired when I was making as little money as I've ever made while not in school cost me nothing. We pay our taxes and we get the services we pay for. No worrying about whether the provider will weasel out of covering the expense. We're covered. It's simple. It's civilized. Give it a shot. Are things working out perfectly for you right now?

Is it next month already?

Did you ever pick up that MBV album? I refuse to let your little one be born into a home without Loveless in the library, and will take any steps necessary to prevent it.

I don't know about this socialized health care. Apparently, Stephen Hawking would have been left to die if he'd been born in a country with government-run medical care.
