Let me show you some process for the comic strip.
Generally speaking, I think that the jokes I come up with are hilarious. If a strip is posted, it's because I thought it was funny (or occasionally because I thought it had something serious to say).
And sometimes the joke doesn't seem as funny by the time I get close to finishing it. Usually, the strip winds up becoming something completely different at that time.
Today's comic is different. Stop by and check it out. Don't worry -- I'll wait for you to read it.
Done? Good. Now, stop by and see how the strip originally ran. I still maintain that this idea was funny, but as I finished up the strip I realized that in order for the joke to be as funny to other people, I'd have to wedge in things that I had no room to put in the strip.
So I tightened the joke up a bit. Changed the punchline, changed the build-up, but still it's recognizable as coming from the same original place.

I didn't get to that part yet! But that sounds messed up... I just couldn't believe that they all got everything they wanted by thinking positively... AAAAAAHHH.
