I got a really upsetting letter in the mail yesterday from my complex's management. The letter was a reminder that the lease on my apartment comes up at the end of April, which would ordinarily be no big deal, but in this instance they are going to jack up my rent by more than 10% if I decide to stay. Now, the rent is already a ludicrous $1440 per month for a one-bedroom unit, so it's not as if I've been getting off easy up to this point. I could afford it, I think, but it's just not worth it.
I don't want to go, though! I love my little place, it being in a great location and all. It's just the right size and all put together now, and it really just feels like home. I think I would pay the extra rent if it didn't feel like such an insult after I've been such a good tenant: my rent's never been late, I never need repairs or maintenance, and I'm quiet as a mouse. It really feels like a kick in the teeth.
Where do I go now, though? I'm going to start looking at houses. With the market the way it is (FINALLY), I think I may actually be able to afford to buy something. I have a pretty decent amount saved up for a down payment, too, so my loan shouldn't be too difficult to obtain. In the next couple days, I'll be meeting with a realtor to discuss what it would take to snap up one of those many foreclosed properties you read about in the news. It bothers me a little to scavenge the bones of someone else's misfortune, but hey, they've already lost the house, right?
I'll post pictures of any really cool places I check out.
