Why are we our own worst enemies?

Why is it that to reach enlightenment, we must conquer ourselves? Why must we conquer anything at all? What are we fighting against? Why are we fighting?

Religion is designed to help humans rationalize the difficulty of existence, the hardship of life--and to rationalize why it is we war against ourselves. Sin is simply a reason designed to explain why people hurt each other, and why we hurt ourselves--often against our own will. Why are we overcome with desires? Why do we tend to over-indulge, even if it can destroy in the end?

And why do we humans default to cognitive patterns that can limit our capacity to understand the world, the universe, and keep us from reaching our true potential? Philosophers have existed throughout the ages, but we are no closer to the "truth" than we were thousands of years ago.

Are we simply still evolving? Will we reach a higher cognitive level (if we can survive long enough without first killing ourselves first)?

I believe, as of right now, that the moving force behind existence (all of existence--everything we can and can not sense) is essentially consciousness--the eternal power of thought. There is no "good" or "bad" in it; it simply exists. And we can bend it to our will. I really believe, based on my limited understanding of quantum theory and a few other things, that if we as a species can harness this power--if we can grasp that our thought is the ruling force behind our universe--that peace is possible. But it will never happen before this. And, it is very possible that we will never reach this level.

Oh, and if you haven't seen Watchmen, it's a pretty decent flick.

Kinda makes you think.
