Now, let us discuss me being in Africa. For those of you that dont know, I have been recalled to active duty in the Marine Corps. I was super pissed at first, but when I got here, and realized what we are doing I grew to like it. For the most part, what we do here is humanitarian aid. We provide medical (MEDCAP) and veterinary (VETCAP) services for the people of several Horn of Africa countries to include: Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Uganda, and Yemen. We are a very small force and I think that the world needs more of this kind of military action.
Djibouti is an extremely poor country. About 80% of people are not employed. Housing is built out of whatever they can find; mostly scrap tin and trash. There are very few old people. The children are hard to look at when you first get here. They are mostly thin and weak. Many of the people have untreated cuts that are severely infected.
The children are what kill me. You will find that they are no different than any other child. They really get me going. I have a few kids near base that I hang out with on a regular basis. They were a bit afraid of me at first, but now they come running just to hang out and drink water. Most of them are around 7 or 8. Sometimes they bring their younger brothers and sisters with them. I will post pictures of them soon.
I will stop there for now. I guess that I have more to say about this than I thought. Here are some of the photos that I have taken while I have been here. There will be more on each update. I have some catching up to do.
