This Update Relates to the Art Show At Wdge Gallery. Lauren Gibbes.

Artist Statement

As humans we naturally have the desire to be able to control and manipulate
ourselves, others, and nature. Commercialism helps perpetuate a cycle of
wanting, owning, controlling, and manipulating. I am interested in
biotechnological and pharmaceutical industry research towards a modern day
fountain of youth. Xenotransplantation, cloning, stem cell research, and certain
drugs offer a perpetual quality of life that only occurs in youth. Through the
manipulation of nature we have control over our offspring's health and appearance.
We also have the ability to genetically alter meat and produce for more favorable qualities.
All of the above are highly marketable, which in turn may overshadow what is logically
and morally preferable. With increasing the quality of human life and lifespan,
we also run into problems such as animal rights issues, new diseases introduced to humans
from other species, and a greater separation of the classes.
In my paintings I place an individual in minimal, sterile surroundings to reference
scientific control, medical cleanliness, and ironic purity. The circle is
used repetitively in many of my paintings to symbolize perfection, stability,
commercialism, cellular structure, and mass production. Each piece either juxtaposes
an individual with a product, or features a person as a product. Through the straightforward
nature of my work I depict scientific advances in a commercial fashion, and sardonically
reflect a reality that was former science fiction.
