So I finally banished CoolWWWSearch to hell, but the way I did it felt like it was lacking in...I dunno....closure I guess. Until this point I've never encountered SpyWare that I couldn't extirpate by sifting through the registry for a few minutes, or messing with my startup list in msconfig. But this took something almost draconian to get rid of.
Luckily I set restore points for my machine every day in the off chance that it should contract something that I can't heal...so I rewound my machine to April 1st.
"I say we dust off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure".
No, it wasn't a clean install, but I still don't feel good about it. The fact that people can make shit like this now, with keys that vanish in the registry and background processes that aren't visible to the OS makes me queasy.
