Heather walked quickly down the darkened hallway, watching the the lurid swaying shadows thrown by various bits of debris which blocked the beam of her flashlight. The flashlight was lightweight, plastic, and clipped to her red tanktop. So far every part of this building looked the same: dark stains on the walls, rusty metal grates..and lots of doors that wouldn't open. And just up ahead were 4 more doors to try.
Heather moved to the first one, tried the handle. No good. The second handle, also no good. A brief cough of static from the plastic radio in the right pocket of her jeans made her freeze for a second, hefting her weapon and listening carefully. False alarm...or maybe the radio was picking up something in another room not far from here.
The third knob turned, and she swept through the door, closing it firmly behind her. This room was smaller than most of the others. She spotted a table with mismatched mannequin parts arranged in an unsettling humanoid form, and a dark hole in the floor where it looked like something pushed up through the concrete, leaving the broken reinforcement bars sticking straight up. And over in the far corner, another body on a stretcher. No, that may not be right. There was always a sheet covering whatever was on these stretchers, covered with dark stains which Heather assumed to be blood. But she never checked to make sure.
She decided to take a rest. She moved carefully around the jagged hole in the floor, and made her way to the table. Her wrist was starting to get sore from carrying her weapon, so she put it down for a moment. She was getting tired of the weight at her front left belt loop pulling down on her jeans, so she unclipped the dark narrow cylinder and placed it on the table next to her weapon. The radio in her pocket was starting to hurt her leg, grinding itself into her with every step, not letting the skin breathe, so she took it out to switch pockets....and decided to just rest it on the table with the other items for a minute. From somewhere below this room, Heather could make out an intermittent groan, but she couldn't be sure what it was. Some machine in a subbasement grinding away through corrosion and lack of maintenance. Or maybe something else. A creature, perhaps, wailing in hunger and frustration. She wouldn't be surprised by anything at this point.
She had been sweating from the intense heat and humidity in this building, so she wiped her brow with the bottom of her tank top.
Time to get moving.
She reclipped the cylinder to her belt loop, and grabbed the radio. Just then it let out a shriek of static, startling her. She cast about with the flashlight, but she was still alone in the room. Thank god. She held the radio out and moved it in a slow arc, trying to determine where the signal was coming from. Finally she realized that whatever was causing the unpleasant cross modulated noise signal was coming from the other side of the door at the far end of the room. She slid the radio into her left pocket, and moved toward the door. As she got closer, the noise got louder and louder. She steadied herself, and opened the door.
On the other side was a wide hallway, lit by a few emergency lights which still worked. And sure enough, there were creatures in here. 3 of those huge, lumbering things with those thick, meaty limbs. At least 2 of those dog-like creatures with the heads which opened into gigantic mouths. And a few more of the smaller, greyish creatures with no arms.
She dropped back into the shadows behind her and turned off her light, giving her another few seconds before they noticed her. But it didn't take long. 2 of the massive creatures were already moving toward her, with one of the dogs behind.
"Well alright then!" Heather yelled.
"Looks like the gang's all here, huh? Well then lets get this fucking party STARTED!"
She aimed her submachine gun and fired wildly, the rapid strobe of the muzzle flash showing the random trails of bullet holes being drawn on the walls, and bloody chunks being hacked off the advancing creatures. The quick snaps from each ejected round blurred together into a sibilance that made Heather's ears ring. The first creature fell, one of it's legs blown off. The second fell soon after, blood spilling out in a wide pool on the grungy concrete. She saw the dog creature turn and run the other way, and she gave chase, submachine gun still firing wildly. Enough of the bullets found their mark, and the creature stopped dead in it's tracks. To her left was another, narrower hallway, and ahead the main corridor extended into darkness that her flashlight couldn't find the end of. Grabbing the radio from her pocket, she found that louder signals were coming from her left, so she started off that way, gripping her firearm carefully so as not to get burned.
She heard the wails and wet footfalls before she could see them. These creatures were too small to use the submachine gun on effectively. She swung the SMG onto her back, the strap pulling evenly on her chest, and grabbed the cylinder from her belt. With a crackle, the green electromagnetic blade emerged. The blade's glow showed the 3 advancing creatures, and she moved in. The first sensed her approached, and leaped to try to bash her with it's thick skull, but Heather sidestepped, and swung her sword twice. The creature fell to the ground in pieces, and the smell of synged meat assailed her nostrils. With a howl she leaped on the other 2, laser sword swinging madly. After a few seconds, nothing remained of the hapless beasts except for blood stains and burn marks on the walls and floor. The radio was emitting a quiet signal, telling her there were still creatures somewhere nearby. She retracted the blade, clipped the base at her belt, and swung her submachine gun back into her grasp.
She stalked to the end of the short hallway, and looked around carefully.
"C'mon already!" She yelled, the ceiling reflecting a tight echo. "I was just getting warmed up you bastards! Are you gunna make me come FIND you? Cuz if I have to, I'm gunna be mad!"
So, in anticipation of Silent Hill 4
(gimmegimmegimmegimmegimme!)
I've decided to play through SH3 again. But the thing is, last time I played through I unlocked the Beam Saber (it's just a light saber, it even SOUNDS the same) and the unlimited sub machine gun.
It's a very different game now. I don't know if it has quite the same atmosphere, but it sure is fun, lemme tell ya.
My god, it just dawned on me that that silly little story fragment up there actually counts as, dare I say it?-> Fan-fic! *Gasp*
Oh well.
