Melvin the stray update

Just to recap: Melvin wandered into our yard in front of my shop pretty much dragging both of his back legs behind him. It was quite obvious that he was not only in pain but starving as well. I was able to get him to come close to me with food and treats but needed to be creative in order to catch him. I set up a large crate with food in it, attached a long section of a ratchet strap to the front crate door, and hid behind the door of my shop. When he finally wandered in to eat, I pulled the strap so the door would close and secured the door. He was in really rough shape and was skin and bones. Since bringing him in I have gotten him to the vet several times for x-rays, medicine, check ups, and weight monitoring. He ended up having a fractured left hip and a completely dislocated right hip. While he will most likely always walk with a limp, I am happy to say that he is doing extremely well. I spend several hours a day with him while he is quarantined so he is slowly getting used to human contact. We have been able to determine that he was most likely domesticated at one point and had been severally abused. He is terrified of people's feet so his injuries most likely resulted from getting kicked. He now knows how to play with toys and has a favorite go-to toy. He has been gaining weight and looks so much better. Unfortunately the condition of his fur makes him look like a bit of a hobo, but he'll be getting groomed soon to help get his fur back to normal. He is learning his name and has figured out how to ask me for more food. I'm so glad he showed up one day and now can live out the rest of his life being lazy and loved.

good cll on capturing her and taking her  to the vet my man. i have two indoor/ourdoor cats,in the country on a large piece of land. a third showed up about a month ago when a house down the road was demolished and I'm in a similar process getting her acquainted with the indoors aspect of country living. it can be a long road but i am certain she is thankful. giving back even in the smallest ways makes a difference. good on ya

@jimmieknuckles Thanks brother! There's little things you'll start noticing about their demeanor that shows they're starting to get comfortable. Melvin would run and hide inside his little hut if I even got close to him. Slowly he started coming over by me to hang out and lets me pet him more. It was hard at first because I really wanted to pet him but being patient has really paid off. I'm looking forward to him getting fixed so he can wander through the house and meet the other cats that he talks to through the barrier. And your new cat is definitely thankful. Cats make you work harder than dogs do but the end reward is pretty great. I wish more people seized opportunities to give stray animals a good forever home. As you said, it makes such a positive difference in your life and theirs.
