all good art was created either a) cold +/ rainy, depressing climates b) in the depths of horrific personal depression c) in times of national crisis [blues coming out of slave dirges, the great depression and extreme class differences of the 20's and 30's gives rise to jazz and gershwin etc], or c) under the influence of large amounts of drugs [see: Brian Wilson - 'Pet Sounds' a great example].
black flag and dead kennedys, bands even my dad can appreciate for their artisticality, came out of the regan era. The Stooges came out of detroit (nuff said) and punk music came out of the mid-late 70's which... when you look back on it without rose tinted glasses... was some of the most boring autocratic times the western world has faced since the idealism of the 1950's.
robert johnson - an early early blues guitarist - who is possibly the most influential guitarist of all time although youve probably never heard of him - would probably be considered a danger to himself in these times. an incredibly shy, self deprecating, manic depressive man, he made amazing fucking music. brian wilson created allllllll his good music under so much drugs and self-loathing that would crush a normal person uncapable of dealing with it. fats waller - a jazz pianist - who played an enormous part in creating many of the standards you hear today - was permanetly fucked on enough cocaine and marijuana to kill a small pony or 15 Rick James's.
passion is a quality that appears in many ways and is essential to making good music. passion towards hating ones self or the government or what have you - INTENSE passion - in the hands of a right person.
shit, i've written my best songs when i was about ready to off myself.
i dunno. i was bored and thought i'd type what came to mind. ♥n
