It's strange how stuff you take for granted affects you.
I crashed my car and it's dead, but in a way it's kind of nice not having a car. I spent 6 months in Toronto without a car and it was great. You don't have to worry about one, you get your metro pass and you can go anywhere, any time.
Yeah sure, you miss a car every now and then, like when you have a load of shopping to carry and it's -25... but on the whole it's pretty good not having one as long as you have another means of getting round.
Don't get me wrong, I love driving, but driving to work every day is just a necessity, it's not fun. Even if you take the long way home, you can't have that much fun because there are too many people going slowly. And there are too many hard things to hit
If I had a decent way to get to work every day then I'd happily do without a car completely. It's good to have fun in one, but hey I can go karting for that.
The main thing that I missed the most when I didn't have a car was being able to go for a nice long late night drive just for the hell of it. Stick some music on nice and loud and just go for a drive, it doesn't matter where or even if you go fast. A cruise down a motorway is nice, just to chill out and be on your own when you can wail along at the top of your lungs to some Audioslave
. It's the solitude of it that you just don't get even in a house on your own.
You can use your MP3 player (Santa *will* be bringing me one...lol) on the subway and you're pretty much set, but it's just not the same...
Ah well, as you can see I'm a little indecisive. But then it's not like I have much of a choice. Public transport manages to both suck and blow around here, so I need a car to do pretty much everything.
Roll on diesel barge...
