Reading: well, nothing yet...I just finished Perdido St. Station...
"...IS IT IS IT THOSE NAUGHTY MAULERS THOSE TIRESOME PATTERNVAMPIRS THAT BLEED WEBSCAPES DRY IT IS THEY THEY COME THEY WHISTLE FOR THIS TORRENT THIS CORNUCOPIC SLEW OF FOOD THAT IS NOT TAKE CARE AND WHISPER WATCH...it said...RICH BREWS SIT UNEASY ON THIS PALATE..."

Listening: well, I've been trying to get my burner up and running... mad ...so i made a mix of d&b influenced pretty stuff, ranging from critical darlings like Bjork, the Postal Service and Dntel, and Notwist to silly things like Kylie Minogue and Peaches to stuff like Fantastic Plastic Machine and Daft Punk and then Shpongle, Aphex Twin, and Psycho Freud (thanks obs!)...Anyway, mostly though I'm listening to those dancier tracks at the end of the Postal Service album.

So I have this theory about why certain love songs get stuck in my head. SO, basically you have the 1)"I want love," 2)"I have love," and 3)"Where'd teh love go" types of songs. When you are experiencing 1,2,or 3 it makes reasonable sense that songs about the corresponding experience would stand out as pleasing and maybe be a little more earwormish. BUT I've noticed that the songs that get stuck in my head don't necessarily have anything to do with whether I'm experiencing some sort of 1,2, and/or 3 mix. So why?

I think I sing love songs to myself.

This makes 1,2, and 3: "Treat yourself better," "I'm great," and "Why aren't you like that anymore." I think this revelation is sort of neat. I can think about the songs I'm fixated on as self-critical tools. SO, this week I've been listening to "Brand New Colony" by the Postal Service repetively. Here are some key lyrics:

"...i'll be th fire escape that's bolted to the ancient brick where you will sit and
contemplate your day...
...i'll be the phonograph that plays your favorite albums back as you're lying there drifting off to sleep...
[and then especially:]
...i want to take you far from the cynics in this town and kiss you on the mouth
we'll cut our bodies free from the tethers of this scene, start a brand new colony..."

So, I don't know how I'm gonna kiss myself on the mouth, but it sounds fun. kiss
