Community and dignity

One of the many reasons that I love my SG community is the compassion and support we all show each other. Recently there has been a few occasions where we have needed to rally around each other and lend a hand, to show support and love during difficult times.

We aren’t alone as long as we have one another.

I recently had an idea for a fundraiser for the larger community, that the SG and SGAU family can be a part of. In Australia there is a charity called Share the Dignity, who collect sanitary products and essential items for women experiencing homelessness, domestic violence and poverty.

I thought that we could perhaps have a drop off zone at events, get togethers and shootfests, where we can all donate pads, menstrual cups, shampoo and conditioner, reusable cotton pads, and other everyday personal care items we take for granted. A box that we can fill with contributions for those in need. I will personally put my hand up to ensure all of the donations get to the charity, even if my suitcase needs to be filled with donations and I have to pack minimal clothes for myself. We will make this work.

All it takes is purchasing a second toothbrush, a second shampoo and conditioner during your normal shop. The smallest things mean so much. I know my fellow Aussies will get behind this, and I look forward to being able to help more people.

Personally, jumping from couch to spare bed this past year has taught me that it’s not easy to fit everything you need into a small bag. I have had to leave stuff behind and artfully pack my bag so the essentials fit. I can only begin to imagine how hard it must be for those living on the street, those that have had to flee domestic violence situations. I want to help. I hope you do too.

Check in your Country/State if there is anything similar to Share the Dignity. ‘Helping Women Period’ is an American non-profit organisation that is also committed to supplying menstrual products to those in need. This is such a taboo subject, that we need to push into the forefront of people’s minds.

Share the Dignity also does a yearly ‘Its in the bag’ drive using second hand bags that donators fill with items that would make a woman feel special, pop in a thoughtful note or Christmas card and show her someone cares. Show her that she matters because everyone deserves to feel that way.

What are your thoughts? Do you already donate to those in need? Are you a part of a charity?

Thank you for giving me this small platform in the form of my own blogposts @missy so I can help spread the word about fundraisers and charities that I believe in.

I love my SG community xx

This is actually a great reminder. I support mostly environmental and politically oriented charities, and it's really easy to forget (at least where I live, where all the rural charities that focus on people are religiously affiliated) that people need help every day as well. I'll make an effort to expand the scope of the organizations I support this year. Thanks for the post!
