The "standard" pronunciation for forte is "fort." The short explanation is that it's from French, where even the 't' isn't pronounced - as in "for."

The other "forte" is Italian, as in "pianoforte." It means "loud(ly)." "Fortissimo" means "very loud(ly)."

The word forte has been pronounced "for-tay" in American English for decades, mostly because people are used to hearing it prounced that way from their music training, and they have no idea that there is a different "forte" with a different etymology.
