So if you've been following the last few journals, you may remember that I mentioned that this Winter Break, I was going to check the Feynman Lectures On Physics V1 out of the library for a review. Oddly, both copies of the book in the entire county were checked out ahead of me--a day apart from each other and won't be due until near the...

Oh! My! God! I got my X-mas present early! Mara and Astrokreep23 gave me a handmade Vampire Hunter kit! It's in a wooden carrying case and comes complete with a wooden stake, a cross-shaped Holy Water flask and a Bible, all held in place by black velvet! The stake they hand-carved, stained and capped with leather and studs. They even made the box and handle!...

So?!?! Did you kill any vamps yet or what? If you're having trouble finding them, I hear they hang out at coffee shops during the day, when they're most vulnerable! That'd be a good time to give the Jack, or rather the stake a try.

pihka:
Uh-oh. Beware, vampires.
Merry belated Yule as well- although I tend to think that festivities and holidays last about as long as we make them last.
So its not that belated at all..

Ah...finals? Done. Cricket set? Awesome--yet another Aries, I admit I have a weakness.
It is now time to relax. I'm reading a novel by Chris Bunch--of Sten fame--and it is very good.
Soon, however, I will be checking Feynman's Lectures On Physics Vol 1 out of the library for the duration of Winter Break. Time to review some Newtonian mechanics, people! Mmmm...the Second Law...yet another...

Jesus. Four of the five aforementioned exams down, one to go. Logic final tomorrow. Yum. My brain hurts. Owwwww.
Of course, the new Twwly/Noelle set makes it hurt less. I think we should all move to Canada....

thanks

You'll excuse me for a while. I have five exams in two--count 'em, TWO--classes in the next week.
See you on the other side....

Joao Magueijo on life at Cambridge:
Regarding the more farcical implications of university law, however, I've heard that once during an exam a student caused consternation by invoking an obscure medieval statute wherein it is written that examinees have the right to one glass of ale. Confusion ensued, but in the end an enraged invigilator did rush to a nearby pub to honor the statute...

Good one Abe
our school had an old rule about people of Indian or ethnic origins not being allowed in the south west corridors . It was 300 years old or something but a good friend of mine who just happened to be of indian decent used it for a good few months as a reason to be late in the mornings ,and skip classes. He did this for three months before they released an amendment to the rules.

Writing a new journal entry because the previous was getting annoying. Barring, of course, the homage to Flux, and Mara, Quebec dark ale and calculus....
Oh nevermind.

all homage should be to FlUx. And of course the lovely Mara.

Not a big fan of chem, huh? I think chemistry (especially Ochem) gets a bad wrap from all the bio majors who have take it, try to memorize it all, and fail to do so. Memorizing chemistry is one way to try and learn it, but for me at least, its much easier to learn the underlying physical principles of the molecules and then apply them to each problem. It works great for figuring out reaction mechanisms and NMR stuff in Ochem. I have to agree though, I'd much rather derive equations than memorize reagents.
The good news for me, though, is that Ochem research has no memorization at all. This is where those physical principles really come into use especially in terms of structural determination and theoretical reactions. I'm sorry, I just get defensive when people think chemistry is all about memorization...thats biology :]
Good day sir.

Ah, Thanksgiving Eve and fairly well buzzed. What am I thankful for? Terrible...a new dark ale from Quebec. That's what I'm thankful for. And Mara. And rats. And vectors.
Yeah. Very buzzed.
lim (x,y)->(0,0) x^2 + y^3/x - y^(1/2)
That was very difficult to type while very buzzed. But fun nonetheless.
Now let's all go oggle Flux's new set one more time....

All right...yesterday rocked!
First off, I attended a small lecture on String Theory given by none other than Brian Greene himself; a lecture wherein he was introduced by Chris Carter of X-Files fame! Awesome. Historical in my opinion!
The lecture was short and sweet, given as more of an introduction for the public, but Greene revealed that he was currently in town working with the...
