My neighbor is an idot....

So my mom and step-dad came into town this weekend. Being that I was beyond busy with homework, they really only came into town to enjoy the ocean and relax, so we only planned on meeting them Saturday evening for dinner.

The aforementioned Saturday evening rolls around and my mom and step-dad come to the house with the plan of hanging out for a bit until we all went out for food. Sadly, right in the middle of chatting, my dumbf**k neighbor--who had been digging in his yard all day with a backhoe--busted the main gas pipe for the street, causing no end of trouble. Fire department. Ambulances. Gas company. Closed street. Oh yeah...fun stuff.

After a bit, we talked to the fire captain about whether we could leave to go get dinner or whether we should think of evacuating--he said go get dinner, they weren't evacuating anyone and no, we didn't have to worry about our cat as long as we made sure he was inside. Fine.

So we leave--coasting out of the driveway so as not to blow everybody sky-high. Only about a mile down the road, my mom starts getting chills something fierce. Within minutes she was all but having a siezure--it wasn't a siezure but massive shivers which she couldn't control, still....

We drove her to the ER. Luckily, they weren't busy--the only nice thing about this horrendous Saturday night--and they were able to get to my mom right away. They put her on oxygen and contacted poison control and, after running some tests, determined--thank whatever deity-thingies happen to be flitting about at the moment--that her condition wasn't due entirely to the gas. It seems she had a bladder infection or some such pre-existing condition. She then had an allergic reaction to the scent chemicals used to odorized the gas. This reaction exacerbated her already weakened state and caused the siezure-like chills.

The up-side is that she's fine. They put her on some heavy anti-biotics and she's doing okay--although she and my step-dad got a flat tire on their way back to their hotel after dropping us off. Did I mention it was a crappy night?

And the gas leak? The Gas Company capped off the broken pipe five hours after it happened and they succeeded in fixing the problem--and turning everybody's gas back on--somewhere around six o'clock tonight, over twelve hours after dumbs**t busted the pipe in the first place.

Somehow, I'm actually looking forward to Monday.

The re-imagined series is excellent; I think that it's one of the best written shows on television right now.

I've tried to watch the original, but I didn't really like it. On the other hand, it was a pretty convincing portrait of a future that looked very much like the 1970s. biggrin
