Long day, long day. Cold, snow, writing. Mental ditch-digging.

surreal

I like this picture. There is something odd about it, but it may take someone a long time to figure out why it is odd. I think I prefer the version that is not odd, when in fact one is supposed to prefer the version that is odd (as I see it).

Obama racked up more victories today. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle may soon come into effect for Hillary in PA, Ohio, and possibly Texas. Will his own momentum change the dynamics of those state races she needs badly, not for delegates so much as for credibility as an equal candidate - one who wins the traditional, urban democratic states other than Illinois - while he wins traditional republican strongholds.

Much as I dislike Hillary viscerally, I am very concerned should Obama win. I think the complexities of the job are greatly underestimated by those who've never been close to see what actually needs to be done to make everything work smoothly. Iranian speedboats are firing on American destroyers with machine guns in the straits of Hormuz; who do I call; what admirals and generals do I want in the situation room; which undersecretary of defense and which undersecretary of state. Do I even know who has what portfolio, and having never been in such a situation, can I have any instinct about what to do, or go three levels deep into what the Iranians may be thinking and what logic tree I must go down to figure out the consequences of various actions I may take.

How do I even have a feel for who to hire for those hard to fill, and hard to do jobs, of SecDef and Secretary of State? One sees very accomplished people fail in DC when they come (I mean below the Presidential level.) It is not easy.

I wish there were a way to reconcile the "feel good" sense Obama brings with the need for experience. We are not in the period from 1988 til 2001 when we were basically at peace. The threat of communism had disappeared and there was no serious threat of radical Islam bringing the battle to us.

Has Obama thought out in advance what he does if a dirty bomb or nuclear bomb of small size but great destructive power is detonated in a major american city? Does he have enough understanding of how other world leaders will react to be able to tailor our response so that we retaliate but don't escalate?

I could go on and on, but I am worried. He would be better, more credible, to lose and spend another four years in the Senate, particularly on a committee like Foreign Affairs or Armed Services. I don't think he has the patience. I hope nothing serious happens. eeek
