I finished the shelf project. It's not as ugly as I'd anticipated. I'm still not proud of it, but it's good enough that I didn't just trash the thing.
Strange dream last night. I dreamt that I was the House (tm,c,pdq) character, but as a private investigator. Bruce Willis was my partner. We'd been hired by a wealthy family to discover how someone kept penetrating the security around their mansion. Every night the motion detectors would go off and the guards would sweep the grounds while the family, father, mother, little boy, would lock themselves into the panic room with a guard and a guard dog.
Turns out the little boy was using a small r/c toy to trigger the motion sensor because the guard dog was affectionate to him, while his parents basically ignored him.
Weird.
