What is it with people? Why is it some of them act in a way that perpetuates the negative stereotype that they feel is unjustly bestowed upon them? By their actions the stereotype is only reinforced which in turn ensures that more negative views will be given them. Of course, that will anger them and cause them to lash out and do destructive and self-destructive activities. Ah, the vicious circle of life. I'm sure you're wondering what the hell I'm talking about, some of you anyway. Allow me to share.
Saturday night, September 29, someone kicked the door to my apartment and broke the door frame which now has to be replaced. Who did this, and why did they do this? One can only surmise. This happened at about 9:30ish while I was home. Lights were on, stereo was playing, and I was cooking and blabbing on the phone. Lights + noise = somone obviously home. I don't think anyone was actually trying to break in, that would be pretty damn stupid, even for the trash that lives around here. I can only theorize that they were just trying to scare me or intimidate me for some unknown reason. I've lived here for three years and seen and experienced a number of things so you'd think they'd get the hint that I'm beyond being scared or intimidated. If the shards of glass from my broken bedroom window New Year's Eve two years ago, and the stereo being stolen out of my car last year, not to mention the random acts of lunacy that go on around here, like the dumpster being on fire, didn't faze me, why would this? I was told that kids were seen playing inside my car. And again, what's the point anyway? Are these hate crimes? A little more info for those not in the know: I live in a ghetto which is comprised mainly of blacks and most of them are trash, same with the few whites who live here. To be fair, it certainly could've been one of the whites, but the only people I've ever seen infesting my parking lot have been black. I guess we were lucky enough to have decent people live above us and to one side of us for most of the time.
To come back to my original query, what's the point? Why, if they want to be seen in a better light, do things like this? Just kick and run, without balls enough to stick around so I can pummel their heads into the concrete. They're just bored, angry cowards. Don't they realize that these actions only attract the same type of vibe? My roommate hasn't had anything happen to him or his property, not that I can seem to remember right now anyway. I have no doubt that these acts were visited upon me because I haven't always been the greatest person or the most upstanding of citizens. A lot of people tell me I'm too hard on myself, I just call it tough self-love. But at least I have taken responsiblity now and am trying to make a decent life for myself. When are they going to wake up? Even Jesse Jackson said that a young black male's worst enemy is himself. I know it took me a while to wake up and I'm just one person so we can't expect an entire culture to enlighten themselves but let's see some progress at least.
For now, I'm just glad I don't have the nickname they gave me when we first moved in, it slowly went away which is good because I got tired of saying no. The nickname, in case you really want to know, was "Hey you got a dollar?"
Rock on,
Kirwin
P.S. We're moving November 1st. Can't wait!
