i was looking at a tattoo thread today and it got me thinking. well, to use a more specific verb, it got me to remembering. remembering why i got them in the first place. and i thought i'd share because, hey, sharing is fun!
my first one is a broken heart under my left arm, with two nautical stars and a banner that says "libertad." the signifigance is as follows: the heart is for my stupid romantic side. the banner represents my ideals. the stars, well i have just always likes stars. anyway, the whole tattoo is a symbol for my youthful ideals from when i was 19 (i got it when i was 19). i hate people that drastically change their political views when they get older, and especially the ones who write off their youthful liberalism with the "oh, i was just a stupid kid, i grew out of it." so that tattoo is there to always remind me of what i believe in, and, when i'm old, if i do end up changing my beliefs, then i will have to live with a daily reminder of the way i used to be.
my second one is the infamous fedaykin crysknife i share with flux. it is foremost a symbol of our friendship, and secondly a homage to science fiction and our love of dune. but it has a deeper meaning beyond the obvious, which is best summed up with the promise we made to each other upon getting the knives, "to always be cool, and never suck." that was a bit tounge in cheek, but it again goes with the not changing beliefs theme of my first one. in dune, the fedaykin were warriors who made an oath to die for their beliefs.
noticing a pattern here? that was actually all planned out in advance. early on, i picked my left arm to bear images representing my self and things i believe in. my right arm is promised to my heritage, family, etc (which is why my next one is going to be a "georgia on my mind" themed piece).
i draw my tattoos myself because i don't think anyone can really capture what i want on me for the rest of my life better than i can (though there is this one sailor jerry flash piece i might get).
anyway, hopefully that offered some insight into the strange workings of my mind. and now... i'm going to go out drinking. cheers!
