So I've been renting alot of horror films lately. Its varied, classic, hammer, now i'm into the 70s...now I've always loved the slasher and only recently been able to appreciate the films...sadly some of these films are not on dvd and i've only gotten to see them thanks to IFC or private collections(Thank you Sadie).

This weekend, I watched Black Christmas and Last House on the Left along with Dawn of the Dead Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the sadist(even though thats the 60s and not really horror). I've also recently watched Carrie again,the exorcist the hills have eyes, I spit on your grave, children shouldn't play with dead things some grindhouse type films too... I guess what i'm saying is...

WHAT DA HELL HAPPENED???

these films...sooo visceral...sooo gritty...sooo like damn you know....true I wasnt scared but it was great viewing. I mean they had a documentary feel to them. Alot of these films didnt have the blood and gore(unless i'm just watching edited prints on dvd) which made it even better. Wow...I guess implied is even better then actually seeing it. if done by the right people. I know the prints were different back then and the film stock but when did horror become soo... clean you know...when did it stopped being gritty and unnerving and go for stylish and cool. I think it started with scream.... Its funny...I actually liked the first scream but since then....we get a bunch of young WB castoffs and wannabe's screaming and being too pretty to care about. I mean at least the butcher meat looked sympathetic. Looked like people i knew in the street. Not DAMN PARIS HILTON.

I mean from Psycho til I say 90 or something(it appears i cant bring myself to watch anything in the 2000's that I really like even though I can tolerate Devil's Rejects BUT DESPISED House of a 1000 Corpses, Cabin Fever. I tolerated 2001 Maniacs for Robert Englund but the acting was more abysmal then usual. I HATE THAT. And now we are in the age of the remakes(House of Wax, Black Christmas, TCM, Halloween Remake is coming, Friday the 13th, When a Stranger Calls, the Thing)and the age of Horror being PG-13. FUCK THAT!!! They try to pass it off on dvd as being unrated and having supposedly all the uncut stuff but we know thats not true. We also know that kids will sneak into an R rated film quicker then PG13...WHY? because they wanna see the blood. They wanna see the viscerations...they wanna see the gratuitous nudity. Hell I wanna flinch and get nauseous.... I want to look at a film and have at least an effect of me thinking bout and going wow, that's a dvd keeper. But nooooo, we get the PG13s...we get the SAWs who try to be visceral and gritty but eh....we get ELI ROTH!!! I just dont get it....When did Horror Go wrong?
