my mother has long since been worried that i'll become an alcoholic. she's 'in recovery' herself, has been for about eight years now. i believe this preoccupation started when she read somewhere about the possibility of alcoholism being genetic. i for one think that that is complete bullshit, but that's only because MY view of addiction is that it's entirely mental in most cases. it's true that in some cases, chemicals like nicotine can be used to help enhance it, but the situation itself is very mind over matter- unless someone is shoving cigarettes in your mouth, lighting them, and then manipulating your diaphragm to get you to inhale. addiction... can be conquered when you find the thing that's making you addicted. why in the hell are you smoking in the first place? it's not the cigarette's fault. it's because you're bored, or stressed, or feeling masochistic, or wanting to be like everyone else, or thinking smoking is a good substitute for eating. it's not in your genes... it's in your mind.
i, for one, defy all norms. i've smoked before, mostly american spirits but also marlboros and camels, whatever anyone has on hand. and not once after smoking one have i become so deluged by nicotine that i wanted another. it's a choice thing, you farts.
the same thing goes with drugs. my friend and drug dealer, who will remain nameless, is constantly getting harrassed because he writes about his trips and everyone is always telling him he's addicted and that they're worried about him. this guy is, quite possibly, the most un-addicted person i know. the same goes for me. a lot of medical reports on drugs use the term 'psychologically addicting'. i remember reading this somewhere on a report about ecstasy. the reason it's psychologically addicting is because if you're using it for the wrong reasons... to make yourself feel better about a life that's shit, for example... then when you come off your roll, things are going to be worse than before, because now you've had this chemically created experience that you're too pathetic to top. so you do more, and, with ecstasy especially, it doesn't work as well, and eventually your brain melts into a puddle from overuse and you get to be spoon-fed for the rest of your life (or be on antidepression drugs, bleh.)
yeah, drugs are bad. no shit. they're chemicals shoved into your body that your body isn't used to. but then again so is alcohol, so are fatty snack foods, so is soda, so is shampoo and hairspray. but you don't get high off soda, you say. more's the pity, i say, because if it's going to be that bad for you, you might as well get something out of it besides a nice taste.
