Ah...our first shitty show. There's a really cool club here called Subterranean. I saw Jucifer there a while ago. It's an awesome old building that used to be a brothel in the 20's and still has a nice art deco feel to it. I saw on their website that they do open mics there on Mondays. We were going to play there last week but at the time we felt it started too late (around 10pm). We had a pretty good show last week at a coffee shop around the corner called Filter so we were feeling pumped to do another. We decided then to play Subterranean tonight.

We wanted to get there a little early so that we weren't the last ones to go on. Apparently, we didn't get there soon enough. We arrived around 9 and signed up. We were 10th in line which sucked but whatever. There was a 3 song/15 minutes, whichever-comes-first rule so we thought it wouldn't take horribly long. I think a lot of friends of the host (who was extremely annoying in my opinion) showed up and it felt to me like they were playing longer than 15 minutes.

At around 12:30, we finally went on. For those of you not up on your math skills, that's 3 1/2 fucking hours of sitting there listening to performer after performer all sounding like Dave Fucking Matthews. After seeing the crowd all pumped and dancing for this crap music, I had a feeling we wouldn't be as well received. I was right. I wouldn't have minded that so much but they had shit microphones there that didn't pick up my guitar at all. In order to be heard, I had to use the host's guitar, which was acoustic/electric. It was also a piece of shit. It was out of tune when he gave it to me and the frets were crap. During "The Wave," it sounded like I was playing a banjo. Then, to make things more interesting, he had an ultra shitty cable hooked up to his guitar that caused the sound to keep cutting out. We finally got through that song (our second) and the host said, "Ok, guys...that was three, right?" I said, "No, that was two." He looked back at me and said, "That was three." I had to inform him that the second song was in two pieces because of his shitty equipment. It was nice to know that he wasn't really listening to us. He let us go on, but I don't think it really mattered. Nobody applauded us after we finished our last song until stupid host guy shouted, "OK! Let's hear it for God-like Creatures!" He then quickly started introducing the next performer.

Although it was an big disappointment tonight, it was also kind of a relief. I don't have to go into a show thinking, "Oh, man...what if we sound like shit and nobody listens?" It already happened. Plus, I know that our sounding like ass had nothing to do with us. We had to work with sub-par equipment and an extremely clique-y crowd. Fuck 'em all. I know we rock and we have awesome songs. Bad shows are inevitable. If there end up being more bad than good, then we've got a problem smile We are definitely paying our dues right now. Boy-howdy, are we paying them.
