Greetings from sunny and hot Las Vegas to all my faithful followers, loyal friends and random stumble uponers.
BOOOOO! It's going to be cloudy with chances for thunderstorms all day Monday. No eclipse viewing for us, even though it will only be about 70% here.
Before getting into how I decided upon my SG name, I want to thank those few that saw and liked my photos. There are more coming as I bumped up my Instagram schedule to once a day in an effort to find the best day(s) to post to IG. I'll probably experiment with time of day each week to see if that helps boost engagement too.
Now, @missy & @rambo asked: How Did You Pick Your SG Name?
I've written about this in a couple of group threads, but never as a blog post, so @missy & @rambo, thanks for asking.
When I joined SG, I wanted to remain as anonymous as possible. I originally didn't fill in the city in which I live, instead using places like The Outer Rim and other fictional places. On most other social media sites, I can be found as GrillSgt or MasterGrillSgt (if GrillSgt was taken). I got that nickname because I was a Staff Sergeant in the USAF when I separated (with an Honorable Discharge) and I love to barbecue. There's nothing I cannot barbecue. I've even barbecued homemade pizza on the grill... no special pans, mats or equipment. And it was delicious.
But as I said, I wanted to remain completely anonymous in the beginning, mainly because I knew a Hopeful on the site. I joined to support her, but didn't want to seem creepy, since I'm much older than most of the people here.
I thought about several names to use, but none seemed right. Many of you know I play guitar. Not as often as I'd like and not recently. It hurts my shoulder to play for more than 30-60 minutes right now. But anyway, around 2007, I got an idea for the ultimate tribute band. Most tribute bands focus on a single rock/metal band: Hotter Than Hell - KISS, Atomic Punks - Van Halen (before Sammy Hagar), Rockford - Cheap Trick, Damage, Inc. - Metallica (early), High Voltage - AC/DC, The Iron Maidens and Children of the Damned - Iron Maiden. There are plenty more.
My idea is different. It's called The Dead Guitarist Society. We'd play songs by bands and solo artists from which one or more guitarists (including bassists) have died; even those in which they didn't play guitar often with the band, such was Brad Delp, who was the lead singer for Boston, but also played guitar sometimes. So we could play songs from Ozzy's first two solo albums (Randy Rhoads), Pantera (Dimebag Darrell), The Who (John Entwistle), Johnny Cash, Boston, The Beatles (John Lennon & George Harrison), and so many more.
So I my SG name DeadGuitarist comes from my tribute band idea.
