No Gym? No Problem!

@wickedargyle, you might be interested in this new series of blogs I'm going to write.

Tonight (Wednesday) was supposed to be a gym night. Meet with my personal trainer at 7:00 PM PT. But, as I mentioned in my WCW blog, he texted me late in the afternoon asking me if I could switch to tomorrow (Thursday). Not a problem.

But, I still needed to work out for at least 30 minutes.

See, the company I work for started a Wellness event/challenge for most of November: from 01-20 November 2016. Each day there are 9 things you can do. You earn a point for each one you do each day. At the end of the event/challenge, the two people with the most points win a Fitbit. Since I'm already going to the gym 2-3 times a week and trying to eat healthier, I figured I might as well join.

The 9 things are: walk with a coworker (if you don't work in the corporate office in Atlanta, GA, just walk), 30 minutes (at least) of additional exercise, eat a healthy lunch (no chips, desserts, sodas, etc.), no sweets, eat vegetarian, get 7-9 hours of sleep (this is the toughest one for me), have a conversation with someone who is not on your work team, preferably not about work, go offline for at least 30 minutes when you're away from work, and drink at least 8 8 oz glasses of water.

At lunch, I walked over to the mall to do my civil duty and vote (early voting in Nevada is going on until Friday, 04 Nov). It was at the opposite end of the mall from the food court, so I walked there and went to Panda Express. I got a bowl with brown rice and teriyaki chicken. Walked back to work and ate lunch. 2 points.

For my additional 30 minutes of exercise, I did cardio boxing, which is my favorite cardio exercise, hands down.

ABOVE: stock photo from Moov with my stats

Each segment is 5 2-3 minute rounds with 30 seconds of rest in between each round. After five rounds, you can quit or continue. I've gone 10 rounds several times, but this is the first time I've gone 15 rounds. Cardio boxing is not only a good cardio exercise, but it is also a good shoulder workout. After also working out my shoulders on Monday, I fully expect my shoulders to be sore later this week. I also drank 30 ounces of water during and after my workout. Combined with how much water I drank during the day, that's 2 more points.

I didn't have any sweets either. Since they didn't specify explicitly you can't drink soda during the challenge (so I'm assuming you can't drink any soda, regular or diet; this is going to be a long 3 weeks). 1 more point!

There's always good non-work conversation to be had where I work, so I participated in a group discussion. This occurs almost every day, so that's an easy point every day as are the exercising and healthy lunches. So point #6, including the walk to and from the mall and the healthy lunch. Point #7 is for being offline for at least 30 minutes, which I did when my wife got home from work and an interview, watching the World Series and cardio boxing for 30+ minutes.

Won't ever get the vegetarian point. I like meat too much, plus I use whey protein powder. Soy gives me nasty smelling farts. Don't want to subject my co-workers to that, not to mention my wife. And I'm not going to get 7-9 hours of sleep tonight ☹️.

I'll update everyone on this periodically.

Stay Tuned...

@floydian, cardio boxing is more fun that treadmills, ellipticals, stair masters or stationary bikes. I have to be careful with my left knee from a grade 2 strain of the medial collateral ligament in my left knee 6 1/2 years ago. It still gives me trouble once in a while. So I am reluctant to do any high impact exercises even light jogging. So right know I just do a brisk walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes after my strength training. But I don't think I get as much out of it as I do with 20-30 minutes of cardio boxing (which I do with boxing gloves).
