Blog Homework: Looking Forward to Autumn

@rambo, @missy, faithful friends, loyal followers and random stumble uponers:

I'm back with a new blog homework: What am I Looking Forward to This Autumn?

This is an interesting question, but easy for me to answer, which I'll get to in a moment. Why the wait? Well, if you've ever read my blogs and blog homework, I can rarely write a short blog. I always have something interesting (at least I hope you find it interesting) to add and interject. Hopefully I can wrap this up quickly before I need to shower and shave for the Black Sabbath concert tonight.

It funny how as we get older or move around our favorite seasons change. As a kid on a traditional school schedule, summer is often our favorite season because it means no school for 3 months or so. For me, it was spring and summer not only because of no school, but also because of Little League baseball. I loved to play baseball as a kid.

Sometimes, the favorite season is winter because of Christmas and snow. Not for me since I grew up in Southern California and we rarely got any snow. But it was sweet when we did.

After living in Las Vegas, NV a few years, autumn became my favorite season for the reason I will reveal below.

In September 2007, we moved near Charlottesville, Virginia until January 2011 because I got a new job there. After a year there, my favorite season was spring because it warmed up. It was the first time I lived anywhere for any length of time that it was really cold (cold for me) during the winter. But, autumn was spectacular in the Piedmont region of Virginia. The Blue Ridge Mountains exploded in a cacophony of red, orange, yellow and brown with a mix of green from the evergreen trees.

Back in Las Vegas, where I got a new job in February 2011, autumn once again became my favorite season.

So finally the reason autumn became my favorite season AND the one thing I'm looking forward to this autumn (and every autumn for as long as I live in the desert southwest): the HEAT is gone. And I have about 6 months of fantastic temperatures and no 100*+ weather.

It's not that I absolutely hate summer and the 100*+ temperatures, it's just that outdoor activities are tougher to handle at my age during the summer. I love the outdoors, but I can't handle the heat for hours like I could in my youth.

So for autumn (and winter and spring), I'll be enjoying milder temperatures (it doesn't get all that cold in Las Vegas, though there are days when a coat heavier than a hoodie is needed).

It's the lack of 100*+ temperatures that I look forward to most this, and every autumn.

Stay Tuned...
