Some people say religion is self-imposed ignorance

Then you have most of the American people. Christians are servants of God. They worship him and in turn, they'll get salvation. The resurrection, immortality, and the immaculate conception are at the core of the belief system.

But there's more. It's a way of life. Christianness also means that you adopt the 'WWJD?' lifestyle. So this all shapes identities and awareness. People pray daily or even many times per day to bring them closer to God.

It's not just a self-reflective exercise - or a community event - or beliefs - but something much bigger. The process of assuming this Christian identity and involving thousands of people all over the damn world.

I'm comparing this for a reason - to put it along-side politics. Hegel says that the daily newspaper is the modern equivalent of daily prayer. These days, switching that around would make more sense - not to mention the quality of the news.

Point is, worshipping doctrines and idols of any stripe can lead to negative consequences. I've met a lot of progressives who are SO political that they've become intolerant and - really - ultra-orthodox. What if you're wrong about it all? whatever
