Many people have heard about the appalling, brutal gang rape of a 15-year-old that occurred in Richmond California recently. I have lived in Richmond for much of my life. I grew up here, and I am used to violence as a part of the reality that goes with the sort of abject poverty in this community. But even my hardened soul is horrified by this crime. Thankfully, our community is trying to find a solution to the underlying problems that cause these types of crimes, and we are mobilizing to protect our children. In the meantime, we are hoping to help the young lady begin to heal. I don't know that she will ever be whole again, but hopefully, she will have brighter days in the future. If you would like to help her, please donate money to the fund set up for her at the Mechanics Bank, or send a gift or letter to her care of the Richmond Police Department.
