So.

I just watched the movie known as Three...Extremes.

it is an asian trio of films. one from Hong Kong director Fruit Chan, one from Korean director Park Chan-Wook, and one from Japanese director Takashi Miike.

The goal, set by the producers, was for each director to make what they think a horror movie should be. Not fucking Jason hacking away at nude girls and Freddy making lame puns, no not that kind of horror, the kind of horror that makes you go "oh my fucking God. what the fuck is going on"

Dumplings - Fruit Chan
A young woman who vainly wants to look and feel younger starts seeing a woman, Aunt Mei (Bai Ling) who claims her special dumplings will do just that. but soon, after learning the special ingredient in the dumplings she becomes obsessed and longs for more, almost in a vampire-ish way. she even goes so far as to do something horrendous to her husband, and something even worse to herself to obtain what she longs for...I won't say, A, because its horrificly gross, and B...wouldn't want to ruin the surprise.

wonderfully shot, and a fantastic preformance by Bai Ling as the cook, Mei make this a worthy entry, and the end, is just "HOLY FUCKING SHIT, BATMAN, DID SHE JUST DO WHAT I THINK SHE DID!"

7/10

Cut - Park Chan-Wook
a young film director is kidnapped by a stranger, who turns out to be an extra from all his films. This man is pissed, because he can't understand how a man as rich as the Director could be as happy, easy going, and good natured as he is. He tourtures the Director and his wife to teach the the lesson that riches are fine, but if you got em', you had better be a fucking asshole.

Greatness in surreal filmmaking has a name, and it is Park. The visuals are just stunning, and so much fun to watch. and the way the plot unfolds, as short as it is, it feels like a full length movie. Look out for a role by the girl who played the scourned daughter Mi-do in Oldboy as the wife of the Director, and check the movie within a movie, looks like it would be a great flick all in its own.

Box - Takashi Miike
a young woman keeps having dreams, dreams about her sister and her father (or father figure, i wasn't sure) and how they supposedly died, and her involvment in their death. She keep seeing herself trap her sister in a box, and then accidently set the box on fire, and the fire spreads burning down the tent, with only her surviving...she also sees their vengence played out, as she realises the line between dreams and reality are starting to blur.

Slience plays a huge role in this film and when no music, no dialouge, and no sound effects mixed with Miike's vision splash on the screen it is pure cinematic brilliance. This film is the best of the three, and is fucking amazing. Stunned for every second of the piece, I waited on the edge of my seat to see what the fuck was going to happen next...and it proves a point i had just written into my first full length screen play. Sometimes Silence can provide the best conversations.
