Have you heard about the huge conference in Montreal? It's sort of like a sequel to Kyoto. The Kyoto meeting took place in 1997 and now they are talking about how they've done, weather or not they are on track, and what to do after the treaty expires in 2012. 8,000 experts are there from 120 countries and the USA, who is the worlds LARGEST pollutor, is there purely to try and discourage people from pursuing the treaty of which the Americans are not a part. The USA has always said they will not sign because CHINA isnt a part of the agreement... But China is hitting back stating that they have extreme power saving measures already in effect. They have quadrupled their output but their energy consumption has only doubled and while they are always striving for efficiency, they are an emerging economy, unlike the USA who has the highest per capita emissions and one of the the highest standards of living in the world. US says it would be too expensive to join the Kyoto protocol, estimating the economy would suffer by 400 billlion dollars and cost millions of jobs, though... new jobs would be created with alternative energy creation and research

*** Just as a frame of reference... Saving the environment would cost 400 billion dollars... and save countless lives... The war in Iraq.... has cost SO FAR... 223.5 billion dollars and cost an estimated 32 thousand Iraqi civilian lives... 2110 American soldiers lives and just under 16 thousand wounded. Now they say you cant put a price on a human life... but Kyoto is starting to sound like a real bargain to me
