I dont wanna sound like an asshole.. but I am one, so what can I do....
There is really no excuse for not knowing whats up in the world. We have pretty easy lives when you consider most of the rest of the world. Sure we all have problems... but we dont live in famine or extreme poverty.
Part of the resposibility for living in such a state is that we should at least take a little time out of our day to understand the world we live in. 18,000 presumed dead in Pakistan. Can you even wrap your head around that number?
What about Hurricane Stan.. have you even heard of it? almost 1000 burried in mud slides from the hurricane.
Massacre in Rwanda? Iraqi citizens being tortured for a war they didnt provoke or start?
And I already know what your saying. I dont care about that stuff... I dont wanna ruin my day by listening... I don't have to know this stuff... we live in a free country.
If you saw a man laying dying on the road.. would you tell him you didnt care? If you saw a group of teenagers tearing a child to pieces while it was alive... would you care then?
You may feel like you arent priviledged but you are. You dont watch your friends, family members or children die from diseases that are curable or extinct in most other countries.
We at least owe it know whats going on.. and help when we can. It doesnt take a lot of work.. just surf to a credible news agency (No FOX news does NOT count). Just read a few things. It is wonderful that everyone helped out Katrina victims... but there is a world beyond the borders of this continent. Just becasue they are a little further away does not mean that they are not the same people as you or I. Just born into different circumstances. If it were you or I there... would you tell your crying baby that, "I understand that they don't care that you are starving to death... they need new shoes."
Please... love life... live it!!! It is so precious! But remember that there are those for whom a party would be not to start and end each day in pain.. and watching your loved ones succumb, knowing that help is out there... but noone will give it...
