No Child Left Behind?

Oh such a touchy topic for a teacher. I am just now stepping into the world of what these words mean.

Teaching a special education classroom, I've fully realized just how un reasonable the idea of this act is. My students were clearly unable to comprehend much of what they were being tested on. These "standard" tests were highly unstandard for them. Most of my students couldn't even read what they were supposed to be thinking critically about.

All of them are at different levels of understanding. Yet all of them are required to perform as well as everyone else, whether they be a second language learner or a student with high anxiety and depression.

My teacher's class time is mostly spent giving them all busy work that they work on individually to prepare them for these tests. Instead these people need to be able to collaboratively work together, and learn to critically think about things! But these tests are so important that there is no time for this in such a scattered classroom.

well enough ranting

NCLB makes me want to stick toothpicks in my eyes. My entire family (all educators) have been boycotting this madness since day one.

I have been discussing this program a lot lately. It is so confusing as to how implementations of its standards should be set, especially with regards to minorities, urban environments, funding, etc. But I'm sure you know that, hah
