Looks like I'm moving back to the good old USA in September. I got orders to Hurlburt Field which is about 1 hour away from my hometown in Florida. I feel somewhat bittersweet about it. I'll be soaking up the sun on the beach every chance I get and I'll see my my beloved family and friends more often, but I will also be closer to all the bullshit that influenced my decision to join the military in the first place. Thankfully, the aircraft I will be assigned to has a mission that will require me to be gone about 300 days a year.
I'm also kind of anxious/nervous about getting acclimated to living stateside again. I've lived in a rural part of Germany for the past 5 years and have become quite accustomed to a certain way of doing things. I anticipate having reverse culture shock: traffic, strip malls, bad drivers/driving, nosey neighbors, ugly billboards....the list could go on and on. I'll have to remember all the plus sides so my transition isn't so rocky: no language barrier, 24 hour convenience, THE BEACH, Red-Blooded, All-American Men, living closer to my Mom, more volunteer opportunites, American Men (oh, I said that already)...
On a side note, while researching possible homes to rent I have discovered Craig's List and all of it's perverse glory. I know, I know...a little late, right? People will post some of the most asinine garbage on there, but I can't look away. It's like rubber-necking a car crash or something.
