I'm not dissing CCR (I wore out their LPs as a boy, and regard John Fogarty's guitar licks among the most timeless and well-crafted in rock n' roll), but they weren't from the southern US, and rather hailed from the San Francisco bay area in California.

Don't know about now, but "Proud Mary" was a staple in every wedding and bar band's set list well into the '80s.
