Few things are quite as terrifying as getting a frantic call from my wife saying that my son's been bitten in the face by a bear and needs to go to the emergency room. Living in Tucson, Arizona one doesn't expect to get bitten by a bear, so my first thought was that I was being pranked. However, my wife isn't one to pull pranks and the urgency/worry in her voice suggested otherwise.

She then explained that my son had gone to a friend's house and was greeted at the door by their dog, Bear. (I then realized I'd misheard my wife. She'd said he was bitten by Bear, not "a bear". Amazing how that one letter word makes all the difference). My son apparently leaned down to say hello to the dog and pet him. For whatever reason, the dog reacted and bit my son, tearing his nasal septum, practically separating the front half of his nose from his face.

He's gotten medical treatment and will be fine. He's just upset that this will get in the way of his ability to play trumpet this week, as he's currently in the middle of marching band camp and has lots of rehearsals this week for the local Jazz Society, as well.

Chalk it up to a lesson learned. I doubt he'll be putting his face in a the line of fire of a dog's maw again anytime soon.
