I am a hobbyist woodturner. I was always pro-safety on my motorcycles, All The Gear All The Time. On the lathe I always wear a face shield and a respirator. A few times I have had pieces of wood spinning at 1000 rpm decide they want to fly away and twice they have hit me in the face. Thank Dog for the face shield.
