School will start up soon -- I am conflicted.
I love teaching. I even love working with the teens although they sometimes make me very glad to not have kids of my own.
I am conflicted because I worry about what I can really accomplish. My kids have so much stacked against them. So many people think that kids coming from the leeward side are just naturally going to be dumb and not capable -- I constantly have to tell them that they have to work twice as hard for half as much.
And I get tired of it. I am trying to teach them how to paddle against a hurricane when what I ought to do is blast the shit out of the hurricane.
But who the hell can do that?
Is it really pono to work this hard so that a few kids have a fraction of a shot of making it to shore?
