So, I decided to give Burzum a try. I've never liked any thing I've heard by this solo musician, but his music comes highly regarded as some of the best Black Metal out there, so I figured it was worthy of a chance. I picked up a copy of the "Burzum/Aske EP" since it was the best ranked on Amazon.com and I'm just not sure what to make of it.

Firstly, as some one mentioned in a review, its more of a Black Doom Metal than just pure Black Metal (the music is slower and less aggressive). As another reviewer said "Vargs music has always focused on haunting beauty rather than violent horror (Mayhem)" and I've been trying to keep these things in mind. Some times it helps to keep in mind what the musician was trying to accomplish when critiquing music. And, with these concepts in mind, it's not bad, but the music still doesn't...grab me. Obviously, any one prefers music that they like from the get-go over music that has to grow on them (though often the latter typically ends up being incredible once it does grow on you).

Vargs vocals are...weak. Some times he pulls off a good scream, but often they wimper out at the end and just sound like pained cries from some one injured. Also, his guitar work is weak. It's very repetitive and weak, with almost no distortion, just some overdrive. His druming is pretty good, though. He pulls off some interesting beats and fills.

So I dunno. I'll have to listen to it some more. I'll admit it sounded pretty good last night when I was in a terrible mood, but that makes sense. It's music that pretty much embodies sorrow.

I have been thinking about getting a copy of 'Filosofem', though. There is a copy on Amazon.com for about $15 from a seller with almost 100% positive feedback. Sounds like a fucking score as far as sales go (as an import, the album normally sells for around $26 to $30 surreal )

Maybe I'll check it out. I took your advice and checked out Coheed and Cambria and liked that quite a bit. I would have gone to see them (They're playing in San Diego tonight) but I just had oral surgery and vicodin or not, I still hurt.
