Have you ever seen a cruise ship up close? For the first time, I just did.

During dinner in downtown Victoria, he waiter at the dining room had mentioned that there were three cruise ships in the city, this evening. I thought nothing of it at the time.

Coming home from dinner, I drove along Dallas Rd. Normally, this is a lovely, senic seaside drive. There is a gorgeous curve past Laurel Point where the road arcs out of downtown, and towards the more residential neighbourhoods of Rockland and Oak Bay. This is also where the commercial docks are. Making this turn took my breath away.

Cruise ships are monstrosities. The sat behind the Ogden Point breakwater like thee ghastly sisters, decked out in pearls. It was like taking a slice of Toronto skyline, three lit skyscrapers, and laying them down in the water. Huge floating apartment blocks, teeming with tour buses, pedal-cabs and coaches. I've spend a fair bit of time here in Victoria, but for some reason, I've never seen a cruise ship, let alone three at a time, in the harbour at night.

And I wondered why there were so many people milling around downtown...

***Update to said Cruise ships: There's no reason to blow your goddamn horns when civilized people are trying to sleep off creme brule and port. You cocks.
