Here's a little tidbit of fun Toronto information, right out of the latest issue of Spacing Magazine.

Regular subway travelers may have noticed that some stations now sport sexy looking new plasma television screens suspended form the ceiling. Ostensibly, these are meant to provide transit information to passengers, as well as news from a stripped down version of CHUM-City's CP24 station. Mostly, however, it's a big flashy advertising space. The TTC has plans for another 300 or so of these puppies. The next phase will include television screens in the subway cars themselves.

The cash strapped TTC is in no position to turn down the advertising revenue that these screens generate. But, here's the erie part, the part that made my blood boil this morning.

The chairman of the company responsible for the new advertising screens is Mile Harris. Yes, that Mike Harris.

So, just to clarify: the man largely responsible for cutting money from the TTC, the man who helped axe the Eglinton West subway line and whose government plunged the TTC into budget crisis after crisis, now stands to profit from the transit funding problems he helped create.

It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
