Today was an adventure in sharpness. I have the bad combination of really sensitive fair skin, and really dark, hard hair. (The downside of celtic blood.) This has, understandably, always made shaving a pain in the ass.

I go through razor blades like water, and use really nice Body Shop and Aveda shave creams, aftershave, etc. But still, I've always ended up with a little bit of irritation on my neck, or just a little bit of rough stubble that refuses to go away.

Today, I tried something new. Well, actually, it's decidedly retro: and old fashioned double-edge razor. The kind where you load in a simple and unbelievably sharp surgical grade blade into a solid metal razor. It's the kind of thing Bogart or Churchill shaved with.

First impression: OUCH. Holy goddamn shit. 10 years or so of various gillette products have turned me, and probably most men, into incredibly lazy shavers. These razors take time and effort - no half-awake 3 minuet shaves. This thing can cut through skin and tough stubble like it isn't there. It gives a close shave, but little novice me has a seriously painful jawbone right now.

It's sort of neat though, like a little connection to great-grandfathers or the style of the 1940's. Damnit, I will master this thing.
