She cried.

It was night. It was always night. Day just never seemed to come, and she couldn't figure out why. Years in the light, no more. She knew she'd never lived in the real world, but it didn't have to come to this. Really.

There is a way out. She knows there is a way out. If only she could see it through the tears...

Broken pieces of centuries-old statues fell out of the sky, only to hit the pavement and shatter even more.

The ensuing roar hit harder.

Had anyone been below, they could have seen glimpses of a shadow pacing on the roof above. Had anyone perceptive been below, they could have felt waves of anguish.

There wasn't.

There never was.

[before... not long ago, but too far in the past]

...but he was being pulled, drawn by some incomprehensible force, toward the edge of the shadow. The moon was full and bright, illuminating everything its beams touched, and he knew that as soon as he crossed that line, he would be laid bare. There would be no darkness in which to hide, only the painfully beautiful light of the moon exposing his identity, his secrets.

Continuing forward, the abandonded demon stepped from the shadows...

Lazily, a pair of eyes followed the black form through the darkness. The mind behind the eyes registered it as human, though it was too preoccupied with bathing itself to really care. Paw suspended in mid-stroke, the cat remained still as it moved away. Not noticing the other being's presence prior to its movement was rather curious, but stranger things had happened in the cat's previous six lives--none of which had prepared the feline for watching the tall form seemingly wink out of existence.
