it just occurred to me how odd a problem inventing cranes must have been.
you have to build something that is for all intents and purposes a building that can build other buildings, yet this proto-building you have to build can't be built using a previous proto-building, and it has to be built at least an order of magnitude faster and cheaper than the building it's going to build.
if i were an early engineer that had to deal with shit like that, i would have just quit and become a peasant.
