every week our company has a Tuesday Chowdown which, when spoken like an Aussie, is alliterate. the way it works is two randomly drawn people cook lunch for everyone else. up today were myself and one of the other new recruits... i came up with the great idea to make a stylized meta-lunch. you can tell already that no good is going to come of this can't you?
so i figured that we should make sushi based on the themes of the previous weeks in this rotation. so far there's been tortellini with a hearty veggie sauce, ad-hoc pizza comprised of mainly bell peppers and sausage, and a sort of lemon pesto fusili dish with a fruity spring salad. easy enough to imitate in sushi right? so an hour of shopping down at the granville market later, we're twenty dollars over the $50 budget but things are starting to look up... for the pasta analogy, there would be an italian themed veggie roll with fresh basil leaves and broccolini florets. for the pizza: par-fried tofu, red peppers, shredded carrots, and green onions. for the greek food we'd make modified kappa rolls with feta cheese and some of the other veggies tossed in on a per-roll basis.
also, we bought 4Kg of rice.
very early on in the cooking, it was determined that the rice was burning, would continue to burn, and was definitely fucked no matter what. a lot of mostly terrible ideas were tabled - including phoning up a sushi place and trying to get a huge box of rice delivered - and we eventually ended up pulling small batches of rice out of the pot and microwaving them, then putting extra rice vinegar in each one to make it taste normal again. oddly enough, it worked. mostly.
we served lunch about an hour and a half late, but despite the lost timing and budget points we got solid style marks. and hey, looks are what really matter right? right.
in other work related news, my three month review is coming up soon. i hope i don't suck.

I'm think you survived the Sushi experience.
