note: as with most ranting this entry is 90% venting and 10% real problems
there's an aphoristic sort of warning out there that's been stuck in my head for the past week or so. it's along the lines of "if you work really hard at digging, all you have is a hole", which is then followed by the idea that a hole with a blueprint is usually called a foundation, and can have better things than outhouses built on it.
i'll cut a long rant short and say that this is all about small businesses not having their shit together... maybe building an outhouse wouldn't be a bad idea after all.
i lied, the long rant is still coming out: with Posh going through things and sorting out her life and what she really wants to do, it's made me think about those same things - like a sort of situational osmosis, to make a terrible metaphor out of it. i've realized that one thing i really need in my work is organization and well planned processes. i've spent enough years dealing with seat-of-your-pants project management; it's really starting to bother me, and i'm debating whether i want to deal with it anymore. i'm getting within spitting distance of the tenth anniversary of my rollercoaster relationship with web design/development and more and more i think i'm growing out of the shortsightedness that seems to plague so many young companies. "pay the bills first, then worry about doing things right". no, goddammit. i don't want to work in the office equivalent of a hand-to-mouth lifestyle anymore. if you can't get your practices and methodology in order, your company is going to be permanently mired in a disorganized, just getting by, halfway there purgatory.
i keep having visions of best practices dancing in my head, with design specifications floating by on clouds... a picture of how i want my professional life to be is coming together as i think about it more and i'm trying to figure out how to make it happen. stay here and try to will some sort of order into being or just build my own company properly right off the bat? i don't know about short term, but i'm beginning to think that if i want it done right, i'm going to have to do it myself. or even better, i could do it with a certain someone.
you know... do it. heh.
