I'm in San Diego right now, sitting outside a bookstore waiting for my turn to go in to meet Jim Butcher, and get a couple books signed
if u guys haven't heard of him, check him out. His main work is a series called the Dresden Files, which is a cross between modern fantasy and old school detective noir style. Really really good stuff. They had a tv Swiss based on it that ares on the sci fi channel before the oh-so-clever name change to SyFy. I've only seen a little of it, and I didn't like it much. Too differnt from the source material. So don't use the show as a reference point, if you've seen it.
Just watched him talk and answer some questions. Funny guy too. Although they could have picked a better spot for him to speak. I was standing for 2 hours in a tiny room with about 200-300 people... And no air conditioning. Next to a woman who kept trying to talk to me while I was reading, and then when Jim was speaking, everyone he said something funny, the lady kept looking at me in such a manner one would do if you were WITH that person. Made me really uncomfortable. Social anxiety in full. Ahh, the trials and tribulations of a fanboy lol.
Oh, an I just saw a storm trooper walk by my car. Why is there ALWAYS a storm trooper at nerd gatherings, whether or not said gathering has anything to do with star wars or not?
By the way, I'm on my iPhone, so forgive me for any oddly spelled words. I'm not self spell chcking this novella

For another series I would recommend Samurai Champloo or Cowboy BeBop. Off beat comedy I recommend Ranma 1/2. Epic mecha series without the emo baggage of Gundam, I would recommend the Macross franchise (Macross, Macross 7, Macross Frontier). Macross Plus is like Macross light and a good litmus test for whether or not you'd like the franchise but the original 1984 Macross series is legendary and has made anime fans out of many.
As far as movies, Akira is a good one to start with.
There are like a million I could recommend but I had to stop myself.
