(I'm back in Chicago now. But for how long?!?!)
For those of you who don't know, I'm really into Japanese modern art. My favorite artists in the world are Mori Chax and Murakami Takashi.
Mori Chax is from Osaka and is famous for the Gloomy bear, an adorable pink bear that kills and eats people. I have a stuffed toy of him.
Murakami Takashi is well known for his adorable, colorful, round prints of little smiling things. This is the official poster for the shopping center Roppongi Hills in Tokyo. They actually made a Roppongi Monopoly that was based on this graphic.
And the other thing Murakami Takeshi is known for are his unbelievably perverse vinyl sculptures of men and women in varying states of arousal. This one is called My Lonesome Cowboy.
More modern artists to come later, this is just the tip of the iceberg. I haven't even gotten to Mizuno Junko or Yoshitomo Nara yet.

Seriously awesome. Repressive societies breed such fantastic expressions of art and literature. Our "open" society often creates lazy ass sheep with no true self-expression.(One of the reasons I like SG is that it attracts a lot of people who don't fall into this categorization)
