I don't think that anything hurts more than someone who said for such a long time that they loved you insisting that they can't love anyone... love is tough - i think that people fall in love and then out of love and they say at the end that they never loved at all, because it's too hard to admit or explain how the falling-out-of-love went. that might not be true in your situation, but i don't know.
