My Daytrip to Smitty's Processing Plant.

I work with a nurse whose husband raises cattle. So when they come of age to meet the Cow God and their time in America has come to an end she has them slaughtered, processed and sells the meat to her co-workers. So in this crazy time of Mad Cow disease and me becoming vegan/vegtarian impossible, I decided to buy 1/8 of a cow, have it processed and store the meat in my freezer to supply my love of grilling outside in the nice Georgia Summer.

So today I make the trip out of the friendly confines of Athens-Clarke county to pick up my meat in neighboring Oglethorpe County... You know somethings up when the directions to this place contains the statement "After the SECOND Golden Pantry." For those of you who know nothing about Golden Pantry's think of a 7-11 and place it in the deep south run by, well people who talk southern.

So gladly without any wrong turns or stumbling on hidden KKK safe houses I make it to Smitty's Processing plant, right across the "new red brick Baptist Church." Now Smitty's Processing Plant is a legitimate business in this county, it only looks like a yellow house turned into a meat processing plan surrounded by houses with rusted pickup trucks in the front yard down a dirt road (Im not kidding).

So upon my arrival I meet Smitty, dressed in flannel shirt, jeans and a john deer hat (it's times like this when I wish I wore the "Big Swamp Hunting Club" trucker hat my friend Brook gave me, I mean it would have been a great topic of conversation for us), we go inside. Where I am completely taken aback by the decor that greets me in his office.

In his office:
One Shotgun (propped up against a vending machine)
One Rifle (propped up against a filing cabinet)
Two stuffed Bobcats
One Stuffed Pheasant
One Stuffed Fox
One Stuffed Raccoon
and Two dear heads on the wall

ALL facing the door
ALL greeting me with black dead welcoming eyes.

"OH MY GOD what have I done" I thought... as I looked around and saw his business card. Not only does he process meat. He's also quit an accomplished taxidermist. So I collect my meat, shake the man's hand and before I climb into my car I notice a sign on the door:

"Hunters, to leave meat to be processed please do the following:
Turn to your right. Turn on freezer. Place dead deer in freezer. Close freezer. Call office # and leave your processing order. Also please tag your dear."

somewhere someplace the God of P.E.T.A. is laughing at me.

So right now I have about 30 lbs of beef in my freezer. 100% grain fed beef, processed at Smitty's Processing Center in Oglethorpe County, Georgia.

My what a day.... Anyone want a burger? wink
tahliana:
Surely, that situation would make you want to go vegetarian purely out of grossed-out-ness!!! hehe smile

Icky!!! (spoken like a true vegetarian haha)

Isn't grass-fed supposed to be healthier?puke Man, I am so glad I've never been to one of those places. I know what you mean about the Golden Pantry! We had Kountry Kitchen, I think, up in Dawsonville.
