For it is he, wonder monster,
embryo god, that has swum in the fish,
shed the skin of the crocodile, peered from the eyes of a serpent,
swung with the ape, and shaken the earth with the tramp of the tyrannosaur's hoof.
It is he
who has cried out
on all crosses,
ruled
on all thrones,
grubbed in
all gutters.
It is he whose face is reflected and distorted in all
heavens and hells,
he,
the child of the stars,
the son of the ocean,
this creature of dust,
this wonder and terror
called M-A-N.

--This is a great passage from an essay by John "Whiteside" Parsons, and this is how I read it and see it in my head.

To answer your questions, I've had one formal teacher, of shamanism, not Wicca. Overall, my path had been dotted with friends interested in the same sorts of things. We talk about things we've done, compare notes, suggest workings or meditations, and help each other work through blocks.

Whether you learn anything valuable working with a coven depends on the coven. I've worked with a coven, and I didn't feel like I learned alot outside of interpagan politics. However, the high priest of that coven had a great deal of wisdom and told a number of things that were very useful when I ran into doubts about my path and had a break with the teacher I mentioned above. So, in my experience, the main thing I gained from a coven is another contact. I hope that lends you perspective.
